The SunRunner is one of the most important investments our region has ever made in public transit. It connects our neighborhoods, reduces traffic, and makes it easier for people to get around without a car. But to truly succeed, the SunRunner needs more than buses and stations—it needs transit-oriented housing.
Right now, outdated zoning rules prevent new homes and mixed-use development along the SunRunner corridor. For example, current regulations require property owners to build a wasteful amount of off-street parking, even if their property is across the street from a SunRunner station!
This holds back ridership, makes housing less affordable, and limits opportunities for walkable, sustainable growth in St. Pete.
That’s why we’re calling on the City of St. Petersburg to adopt meaningful zoning reforms that:
✅ Legalize transit-oriented housing along the SunRunner corridor.
✅ Encourage mixed-use development so residents can live, shop, and work near transit.
✅ Support affordable housing options to ensure access for all income levels.
✅ Reduce car dependence by aligning housing and transit investments.
We’re coming up on the SunRunner’s third anniversary, and the City still hasn’t acted. Every year of delay makes it harder for the SunRunner to reach its full potential.
